The Iowa Department of Revenue is considering whether Dubuques residents are eligible for an exemption from sales taxes if they purchase digital ads.
The measure has already passed the Senate.
If it makes it to the House, the measure could help the state’s struggling digital ad industry.
Dubuque is one of the fastest-growing cities in Iowa and the second-largest city in the United States.
It’s also among the poorest counties in the state, and a third of residents live below the poverty line.
It has a population of about 1.3 million.
Dubux Mayor Dan Bocquet says he’s not sure if the state will give Dubuquese residents an exemption.
Bocquette says he hasn’t heard anything yet from the Department of Commerce.
He says Dubuqua County is the state with the most digital ads in the country.
