A Home Depot advert featuring a woman and a man looking at a window shows a woman who seems to be the main character.
But the ad’s caption reads “The world’s oyster”.
It is the latest in a string of adverts that have poked fun at female sexuality.
A spokesperson for the Home Depot told The Next Media that the ad is part of a larger campaign about the importance of being in control of your life and not relying on anyone to tell you what to do.
“Our goal with this campaign is to remind people that we’re all in control, and that’s exactly what we do at Home Depot,” the spokesperson said.
“We take pride in our home-based business, and we want people to know that they can have their own lives in this world without needing a man’s permission.”
Home Depot is the third largest retailer in the United States with a market share of $1.7 billion, according to Fortune magazine.
The spokesperson told TheNextWeb that the advert is part for the brand’s “best-selling, highest-rated Home Depot products and accessories”, as well as the products and services that customers have requested.
“The ad is about empowering women and showing that they don’t need to rely on anyone, no matter what,” the spokeswoman said.

The spokesperson said the advert was targeted at women who were struggling with their sexuality, and not at the average American woman.
“This campaign isn’t meant to be sexist or misogynistic,” the Home Vendor said.
